Price: Check the website for prices and availability
Site: 3DATS

I couldn’t wait to see what was inside my review copy of ‘Ispirato’ from 3DATS. I was not disappointed. Every page is indeed the “showcase of some of the best 3d visualization talent on the planet” as their ad copy puts it. This book is sitting right next to my computer and there it will stay to be used for one of its intended purposes – to inspire. This book is beautiful both inside and out, being beautifully bound with padded black leather on front and back. With silver foil embossed lettering. Alex Roman’s interior rendering of the Louis Kahn’s library at the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire is featured on the cover...

This following is from the book:
If you are looking for a book on 3ds Max/Design 2011 and mental ray that covers that topic in a clear, understandable way then look no further. This is by far one of the best books dealing specifically with that subject. Throughout the book the emphasis is on how to get good fast results from mental ray. This is something we should all be looking for. Jennifer O’Connor goes into most of the settings in the renderer and shows you how to get the most from them. As the title of the book implies the book is directed more towards architectural visualization community but I believe other mental ray users will find as much value here as the architecturally inclined...

At the end of this month Autodesk will be releasing some very interesting Advantage Pack for 3ds Max and 3ds Max Design to those who have a subscription to those software packages. These will include substance procedural textures, PhysX rigid-body dynamics, and the one we were waiting for since we first reported on it back in January of this year the iray photo realistic renderer.

According to what I've read and heard about the iray renderer (from mental images) is that it's kind of like a point and shoot camera. It progressively refines the image until you end up with a very photo-realistic rendering.

  • DVD Training

by John Swanson

Product Name: CG Academy Modeling Fundamentals I
Media: This product is available as DVD and as a download
Instructor: Chris Thomas
Level: Beginner
Running Time: over 5 hours 20 mins
For Prices and to Purchase: CG-Academyweb site

From site: “This is the first in a four DVD series that aims to teach the fundamentals of modelling in 3dsmax. In this first DVD you will learn how to effectively navigate and manipulate objects in 3D space. Then the DVD moves on to teach you what polygons are and how they are fundamental to all modelling systems. Then we learn about Primitives and how we can change their form using Modifiers and Spacewarps. And finally we make a start on a series wide project to build a go-cart using the skills developed in this DVD.
This DVD is aimed at a user who is new to 3dsmax and modelling. The DVD makes no assumptions about your 3D knowledge and aims to give you a ground up tuition in modelling. Its topics are wide ranging and form a foundation for the DVDs that follow in this series.”

This single DVD is the first in a series of four DVDs. Each can be purchased individualy or as a four DVD boxed set. I was impressed right from the start. The video, whether it’s white board or of the Max interface, is sharp and clear, as is the audio of Chris Thomas’s voice. Professional is the word that comes to mind when thinking about the presentation of this product from start to finish.

Product Name: Ideas for the Animated Short
ISBN: 978-0-240-80860-4
Published: March 2008
Authors: Karen Sullivan, Gary Schumer, Kate Alexander
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Pages: 280
Current Pricing: US $29.95
Site: www.focalpress.com

This is from the publisher's website:

"Build your skills in the development of story ideas that will command an audience for your 2-5 minute animated short.
Packed with illustrated examples of idea generation, character and story development, acting, dialogue and storyboarding practice this is your conceptual toolkit proven to meet the challenges of this unique art form.
The companion DVD includes in-depth interviews with industry insiders, 18 short animations (many with accompanying animatics, character designs and environment designs) and an acting workshop to get your animated short off to a flying start!"

For a number of years now I’ve been searching through books for information about the art of storytelling. It is an art that is as important, or maybe more important, as the art of animation. Ultimately what is the use of great animation if it is not in the service of telling, at the very least, a story that will hold the viewer's interest? This is the subject of the book. In the words of John Tarnoff, the head of show development at Dreamworks “….without a compelling visual or dramatic narrative the graphical elements ore static, the 3D elements are distracting, and the timeline is boring or frenetic. Every film really needs some form of beginning, middle and end, whether it’s a short tone poem or a character-driven narrative.”

We had another great meeting on May 27th, 2010 at the Pratt Center for Continuing Studies. Louis Marcoux was on hand to show us some of the new features in 3ds Max 2011. He went over topics like the Graphite Ribbon, and the improved Viewport Canvas.

During the break halfway through the meeting we raffled off Jennifer O'Connor"s great new book "Mastering mental ray - Rendering Techniques for 3D & CAD Professionals" that was provided to us by Sybex Publishers.

After the break Louis gave a very in depth look at Stereoscopy with 3ds Max that lasted until around 9:30pm. He carefully explained the theory behind the StereoCam Modifier you can find on his blog on Autodesk's Area website. Where he goes into a very good series of tutorials on the same topic. We'd like to thank Louis for being so generous with his time - staying well past his presentation time to talk with our members and answering questions.

Author: Michele Bousquet
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Current Pricing: US $39.95

(Don't forget: New York City 3ds Max User Group discount code- 95116)

This book starts out like this:

"How to cheat, and why" - followed by this:

"The truth about cheating
The word cheat has an interesting history. In its original meaning, it described the passing of an inheritance to someone other than one's heirs. This definition has come up through the ages to mean getting something dishonestly, or getting things by tricks or good luck.

In this book, you'll learn shortcuts to make 3ds Max do amazing things without having to learn it all from scratch, and thus make your own good luck as an artist..."

If you are looking to dive into 3ds Max 2010 and get some kind of results from the program quickly, without having to read about what every button does, then this may be the book for you. It's written with the intention that you do not have to start at page 1 and read through it to the end. You can jump around and read about the techniques that interest you at the moment, try the exercise, then you may be ready to apply it to your own current project.

From the website:
"Brimming with tutorials and practical production techniques from dozens of experts in multiple fields of 3D, this book is arguably the finest collection of 3D talent ever assembled under one title. Written for advanced users in any field, but flavored for those in visualization, this book is a collection of 20 independent chapters containing some of the most sophisticated learning material ever written for 3D. The goal is to take readers from an advanced level to an expert level by providing a straight-forward, production-oriented discussion of difficult subject matter not available anywhere else".

I am interested in all the capabilities that 3ds Max has to offer. Modeling, animation, rendering, etc but everything in that paragraph above excited me. Here is a book with Max and architectural visualization in the same title aimed at someone at about my level. Wow! (As part of my day job I do architectural visualizations in Max based on AutoCad drawings) There are not many instructional products like this available. I found this in the PDF you can download from the mental images site (see below for link) "...iray will be available to mental images’s OEM partners and we expect that they will make it available it in their applications in accordance with their own release plans..."

In an email I received, 3DATS announced its fourth 3ds Max book that continues its signature dedication to the area of architectural visualization: "3ds Max 2010 Architectural Visualization – One Project from Start to Finish". They are working with 3D visualization firm, Cat-a-pult to make the book. The intent of the book is to show in great detail, each step of the visualization process, as applied to one very unique visualization project. 3DATS will be commissioning some of the same talent that helped produce their recent Advanced to Expert book, "to provide a thorough and critical technical review of every page of this book", rendering a book that will be produced to the exact same specifications as each of their other titles.

Product: 3DCONNEXION Space Pilot Pro 3D Mouse

From the web site:
Space Pilot Pro is the ultimate professional 3D mouse, engineered to excel in today’s most demanding 3D enviroments. It’s breakthrough features include second generation Quick View Navigation technology, dual function Intelligent Function Keys and at-a-glance access to important information via the full-color LCD Workflow Assistant.

I’ve had the opportunity to use 3Dconnexion’s Space Pilot Pro for about three months now. I do like it. I find it allows me to get around my models and work on them in a way that I was never able to before. It does take a little getting use to – I have to say that right up front. Once you get use to manipulating the controller cap and it’s (many) controls I think you’ll agree with me. After using it for a few hours over the course of a week or so I felt very comfortable with it....

Autodesk has signed an agreement with Avid to buy it's Softimage business unit for approximately $35 million. That sounds a little bit low when compared to the approximately $182 million reported when the acquired Alias in 2006. As stated in the Autodesk press release " (Softimage) XSI is production-proven 3D animation software for games, film and television. It offers a complete 3D modeling, animation, rendering and development environment for visual effects and custom tools."

Concerning the future of the formerly Avid 3D apps "...we’re committed to giving our customers choice when it comes to their 3D tools. We plan to maintain and grow the Softimage product line, and through Autodesk FBX provide better interoperability between Softimage products, 3ds Max and Autodesk Maya. FBX also provides interoperability between Softimage products and our specialized applications such as Autodesk Mudbox, Autodesk MotionBuilder, Autodesk ImageModeler and Autodesk Stitcher..." and "...At Autodesk, we care deeply about 3D technology; we know users invest a lot of time and energy into mastering their favorite 3D product. To all 3D artists out there, I want to tell you that we understand your passion for the creative tools you use daily, and that with Autodesk, you can choose your passion."
